What Is the Most Useful Woodworking Tool?
Knowing what is the most useful woodworking tool can be a challenge for beginners. Some tools are necessary, some tools are useful but others are just gimmicks. Let’s explore some of the many tools available.
If you’re an experienced woodworker, you probably already have a table saw. You probably also have a jig saw, a hand chisel, a diamond bit and a planer or router. If you don’t, you should get them now.
A jig saw works well for cutting more than one piece at a time. This way you can easily make one long piece and cut it into two pieces. This is especially helpful if you are cutting a piece that is longer than the width of your table saw. The same can be said if you are cutting a longer piece than the length of your table saw.
Using a diamond bit is much like using a diamond saw. It takes up less room and has less vibration than a hand chisel. Diamond bits usually have a smaller radius so they are much easier to work with. Plus, because of the way the diamond bit is shaped, the point of the bit never actually hits the wood, just creates a very precise edge with little or no chatter.
If you like the look of a hand chisel but don’t like the task of cutting wood with it, then a planer may be the answer for you. A planer is a great tool for making small holes in unfinished and thin boards. You can also use a planer for making gaps in the ends of boards that would otherwise be difficult to make in a chisel.
A hand bit is often used to finish a very large stock, but it is not necessary to use this type of bit if you don’t need to. You can make very nice, even cuts on a flat surface with a diamond bit. Make sure the bit is sharp when you do this though so you don’t rip the wood.
Sometimes a router is used instead of a bit. To avoid ripping the wood, use a router to cut out a small radius and use a bit or diamond bit to make the center of the radius of. Use a router to make only the radius of the piece.
A planer works in much the same way as a router but it’s used to make slits in board which make them thinner and easier to work with. With a planer, you can cut the board thin or make it thicker by making slits on each side. Planers have their advantages and disadvantages, so you need to consider these when you are considering using one.
Hand chisels have their advantages too. They are much faster and easier to use than a router. If you don’t like the feel of using a sharp chisel, a hand chisel is a great alternative.
Wood that is not in the finest shape can be finished with a light sanding. It’s important to remember to wear protection to avoid hurting yourself or damaging the surface you are working on. You’ll want to use a light sandpaper if you need to sand something really tiny.
You can complete mortise and tenon openings if you have access to a saw. Remember to wear protection while you are doing this. If you are not able to get to a saw, then try using a router or jig saw instead.
These are just a few tools available. Take the time to consider them when choosing a woodworking tool.
